THEN . . .
By Brent Eagar
WHEN I THINK of Gene England, special memories arise . . .
Admiration. At first, from close at hand . . . as close as deacons can be.
Then…
Admiration as Gene became a teammate in Edgehill Ward basketball. We were fortunate that despite not being particularly skilled, we shared great experiences with coaches and teammates who helped us feel that we were people of worth.
Then…
Admiration as Gene became acquainted with the lovely Charlotte Hawkins. This was truly impressive . . . after all, Charlotte was a queen in training.
Then…
Admiration as I saw spiritual growth in this beautiful couple.
Then…
Admiration as mission calls were received: Gene and Charlotte to Samoa. Me to New Zealand.
Then…
We were so young but fired up with the enthusiasm of the young as a new chapter in our lives opened up.
Then…
We shared a train ride to the west coast and a brief voyage on an ocean liner (The SS Oronsay) as far as Hawaii where we were given a quick tour of Oahu, including seeing the temple. However, the Polynesian Cultural Center was not yet a reality. A few years and it would become Hawaii’s premier tourist destination.
Then…
An opportunity to get acquainted with several Maori Saints from New Zealand who had sacrificed financially to go to the temple. This was my first close encounter with Polynesians who would soon become very important to me.
Then…
I was back on the Oronsay as our paths diverged as we went our separate ways for our missions.
Then…
Out of touch, except for renewed admiration as I got glimpses of Gene’s tremendous influence through his work in academia and service in the Church.
Then…
We again became briefly reacquainted as faculty members at Utah Valley State College, now Utah Valley University. That period didn’t last long enough.

I CHERISH MY friendship with Gene and Charlotte. With gratitude I carry these memories in a special place in my heart. Thanks for allowing me to participate in this modest way.
